从2010年到2025年，预估会有1亿5千5百万的垃圾被扔进海里，如果把这些垃圾装进袋子沿着海岸线放，大概每30公分 (1英寸) 就得放100袋垃圾，如果把它们叠成墙，那座墙会有30公尺 (100英尺) 高。

在所有国家中，中国是制造最多垃圾的，几乎占了总量的28%。

 

加州大学工业生态学的助理教授罗兰‧盖尔 (Roland Geyer) 说：「要大规模地清除海中塑胶残骸完全不符成本，甚至可以说是办不到的。」
